Configure Form Validation Rules

Configure required fields and field-specific validation such as text length, numeric limits, email and URL formats, date/time limits, and choice values.

Validation checks whether a submitted value meets the requirements for its field. Smart Form Builder does not use one universal set of validation controls for every field: configure the controls exposed by the selected field type, then test both acceptable and unacceptable values.

Set a field as required

  1. Select the field on the canvas.
  2. Open its content or basic settings and look for the required control. Depending on the field type, it is labelled Required or Is Required?.
  3. Enable the control if visitors must provide a value. The default is not uniformly displayed as a separate setting for every field, so check the selected field’s own control.
  4. Save the form and submit a test without entering a value to confirm the required-field message appears.

Configure field-specific rules

  • Text Field: use Minimum Length and Maximum Length to limit the number of characters.
  • Number: use Min Value, Max Value, and Step to define the numeric input range and increment.
  • Email Field: the submitted value is checked for a valid email-address format.
  • URL Field: the submitted value is checked for a valid URL format.
  • Date Field and Time Field: use the available date/time settings, including configured minimum or maximum values where supported.
  • Select Dropdown, Radio Button, and Checkbox Group: submitted choices are checked against the options configured for that field.
  • Mask Field: the value is checked against the selected mask format. Configure this in Configure Input Masks.

Test validation before publishing

  • Submit the form with required values missing.
  • Test values below and above any configured character or numeric limits.
  • Enter malformed email addresses, URLs, dates, times, or masked values where relevant.
  • Choose valid options and confirm arbitrary values are not accepted for choice fields.
  • Test the published form as a visitor as well as using the editor preview; do not assume a visual preview alone proves submission validation works.

Validation options vary by field. For the available field controls, see Choose Form Field Types.
