UTM parameters identify campaign links, such as an email newsletter or paid promotion. Smart Form Builder by Dragwyb’s tracker reads utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content from the current page URL and sends them with tracking events. Capturing these values requires visitor tracking to be enabled.
Enable visitor tracking
- Open Smart Forms → Settings → GDPR / Privacy.
- Enable Enable Visitor Tracking. This setting defaults to off.
- Review the cookie, Do Not Track, administrator tracking, user-details, and retention options to ensure they match your site’s privacy policy.
- Save settings before testing a campaign URL.
Add UTM parameters to a campaign URL
Use standard UTM parameter names in the destination URL. For example:
https://example.com/contact/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=autumn_launch&utm_term=business_forms&utm_content=button
- utm_source — the source sending traffic, such as a newsletter or partner.
- utm_medium — the channel type, such as email, cpc, paid_social, or referral.
- utm_campaign — the campaign name.
- utm_term — an optional keyword or targeting label.
- utm_content — an optional creative or link variation label.
Where the plugin stores campaign data
- The tracking script sends all five UTM values with pageview and other tracking events.
- New analytics sessions store source, medium, campaign, term, and content values.
- The visitor record stores first-touch source, medium, and campaign values.
- When tracking and user-detail collection are enabled, form-entry metadata can also include UTM values read from the submission request.
Test attribution and understand limitations
- Open a public page using a campaign URL with recognizable test values.
- Allow tracking to record the visit, then review Smart Forms → Analytics and the available traffic-source details.
- If you submit a form, inspect the entry’s lead attributes to see whether UTM values were saved.
Entry-level UTM values are read separately from the form submission request. The inspected source does not show the frontend automatically copying every page URL UTM parameter into that request, so do not assume every entry will contain campaign values even if analytics tracking recorded them. Session attribution is written when a session is created; adding UTM parameters later in an existing session does not necessarily replace that session’s original attribution. Test the exact campaign path you use.
